TBR Survey because I can't help myself

I said to myself "I'm not going to do any more of those surveys for awhile. I think I'm getting to the point where I'm relying on these too much and I should back off." And then this weekend was busy and I'm trying to get posts done for the week and OH HEY, Sarah (naturally) has another survey and this one is more bookish than most. I am weak, what can I say.

1. How do you keep track of your TBR pile?
Goodreads. Totally on Goodreads. Otherwise it would just be a random list, maybe some titles on scrap paper, others in Excel, mostly in my head (meaning instantly forgotten). However, my Goodreads list is made up of both books I already own and need to read and just ones I want to read. I really should organize those better.

2. Is your TBR mostly print or ebooks?
OK, so my TBR is usually a wish list. However, there are random times throughout the year where my TBR list becomes more than theoretical and I suddenly find myself with a pile of books to get through. Right now is that time, and it's because I found a bunch of ebooks on sale that I wanted, so most of them are there. That said, I did just buy a physical book today, so yeah. Whoops.

3. How do you determine which book to read next?
Just like Sarah, I usually go for whatever I'm in the mood for, but I'm also trying for diversity. The book I bought today fits the diversity category (which NONE of my other books fit, which is sad) so I'm going for that as well. My goal is at least 1 book each month that meets at least one of the three criterion: the author isn't white, the author isn't from the US, the book was published before 2000. It really shouldn't be that difficult to hit, and yet.

4. A book that's been on your TBR list the longest:
I just realized this today, and I'm sort of embarrassed by this, but a million years ago Emily sent me a copy of Any Given Day by Dennis Lehane which I haven't read yet, and only because the book is a physically large book and my shoulders groan at the thought. But I really WANT to read it and it's ridiculous I haven't yet.

5. A book you recently added to your TBR
I just bought Blindness by Jose Saramago. So that.

6. A book on your TBR strictly because of its beautiful cover
None I can think of, on either my "I want to read these but don't own it yet" list or my "I have actually bought you already" pile.

7. A book on your TBR that you never plan on reading
Wait...what? Then it wouldn't be on my TBR list. It would not be on any list because why would I keep a list of books I never plan on reading? I think you have misunderstood the purpose of a TBR list.

8. An unpublished book on your TBR that you're excited for
I don't know enough about the bookworld to get excited about specific books that aren't out yet. I guess I can go with more general ones, like whatever Game of Thrones book George RR is taking his time on (the next one is 2016 now? maybe?) and then in general I'm excited for whatever Bill Bryson, Christopher Moore, and Jasper Fforde have up their sleeves.

9. A book on your TBR that basically everyone has read but you
There are a lot. Americanah comes to mind first. I really will read that. Soon. Probably this year cos of that whole diversity goal.

10. A book on your TBR that everyone recommends to you
Well, Americanah. You know, cos basically everyone has read it and thus can recommend it. I mean I guess if everyone had read it they could NOT be recommending it. But if basically everyone has read it and they were all recommending AGAINST reading it, I'd probably take it off my TBR. So, yeah.

11. A book on your TBR that you're dying to read
If there was anything I was super dying to read, I would just read it next. Because I mostly pick my books based on mood.

12. How many books are on your Goodreads TBR shelf?
This is making some presumptions that I have said shelf. I mean, I DO cos I mentioned it in question 1, but still. Alright, I'm done being argumentative and will look it up. 226.
Damn. That's higher than I thought. And yet, I keep buying books not on said list. (Like Blindness...)

Another survey instead of a review!

I know, I know. I'm doing a LOT of surveys. But here's the thing, they're easier to do than reviews. I still like writing reviews but they take more effort and time, which are harder to come by. Like right now, I need to run to catch a train in a bit so I don't want to start a review and have to stop in the middle and blah blah excuses blah.

Not only has work been busy just...all year practically. But NOW we have additional work/stress. For you see Tom just got a new job (yay!!!) that is in another state (yay?) which means we have to sell our place (booo) and move somewhere else (uuuggghhh).
So all the emotions
I am looking forward to the move, assuming we end up where we'd like cos it could mean cutting my commute in half AND right now his commute is about 2 and 1/2 hours each way so of course he would like to change that. BUT I also really like our current place and why can't I just pick this up and put it over there? That would be ideal. But apparently that's not an option. Thanks, naysayers.

ANYWAY, Sarah recently did a short survey, so of course I'm snagging it for myself. Thanks, Sarah! And I will try to get at least one review written for this week.

1. Why did you start blogging?
I was probably complaining about how I wasn't doing anything with my English degree, and Tom got tired of the complaining and said "Why not start a blog about books?" He has good ideas. Sometimes.

2. What’s the story behind your blog’s name?
Yeah, Tom came up with that too. He's responsible for a lot of this blog. Red because my hair is red and various people over the years have called me "Red". And then the blog is about What I Read, so, you know.

3. How many designs have you been through since you started blogging?
One. How sad is that? I've had this blog for almost 5 years and I've pretty much never changed it. HOWEVER, my dear friend has been working on a new blog design for me. ANOTHER HOWEVER, it's been at like the 90% done stage for over a year now, so I'm not exactly sure when it will actually go live.* But it will be SUPER exciting when it does because I love love love what it looks like.

4. Have you ever switched blog platforms?
See answer above. I haven't even changed colors, you think I've bothered to change platforms?

5. How long does it take you to write a post? What is your process like?
Reviews are usually an hour plus. They'd probably take less if I wasn't usually watching TV while writing them. But that doesn't happen. I sometimes have thoughts and thus write out notes while I'm writing. Other times when I start a review I'm working with a blank page, which is intimidating. I also want to catch up on my reviews so I'm not writing about books I read 2+ months ago.

6. Have you ever been super nervous about a post?
Not many. I am pretty bad at anticipating which posts are going to get the most activity. The ones I assume will be nothing get a bunch of comments, while the ones I think "Ah yes, people will like THIS ONE" get almost nothing.

7. Do you have a blogging schedule?
Ugh, I wish. If I had more time perhaps I'd come up with one. As it is I typically do my writing on Sunday for the week and hope to get something else written at some point after work. That typically doesn't work.

8. Do you tell people in-real-life about your blog? What are their reactions?
Not many. I mean, I don't not tell people about it. But I tend not to bring it up. A few people at work know about it but for the most part IRL people don't know too much about it.

9. Top ten blogs you read/comment on the most:
In no particular order:

Alright I went slightly over the 10 BUT IT WAS NECESSARY.

10. If you could change/improve things about your blog, what would they be?
I would like to repeat Sarah here and say "I want to write better, and more often."

I would also like the new blog design to go out sometime in 2015.

*NOT THAT I AM COMPLAINING because my friend is doing this because he said "Hey I want to make a site and your blog is awesome and I'll make you a new site!" so it's totally something he's doing cos he's awesome. He also recently moved to the other side of the world (China) which complicates things some more. Plus I already sort of made him (and my other good friend) slightly alter their China plans, because they were originally going to move right before my wedding. I maaaay have said "Listen, I'm certainly not going to stop you from moving to the other side of the world for my party. BUT I will be super bummed if you don't make it to my party so...enjoy that guilt." And because they are awesome people and such good friends, they actually did change up their plans a bit and leave out of NYC instead of Boston so they could come to the wedding. I am grateful for my friends. They are good people.

HEY LOOK! Another bookish survey

Yes, I did just do one of these. What do you mean, I'm only doing this to procrastinate on writing an actual review? How dare you accurately state my intentions

So yeah, I know I just did a survey but work has also been insanely busy and the next few weeks aren't looking like they're going to let up so a post like that is a nice way for me to still be able to get a post out even when my brain is mush. Thank you, Sarah (and Kayleigh), for posting another one of these and away we go!

1. Favorite childhood book:
There was this book about a giant chicken that terrorized an Eastern European village and then the people of the town killed and ate it. I have NO idea what the book was called but I looooved it. Not enough to remember the title, however. Just enough to make a diorama of it in kindergarten? First grade? But if you want a favorite book I DO remember the title of, let's go with The Golden Book of Sharks and Whales. I still have random passages from that memorized. Because that's what my brain chose to hold on to in place of loved ones birthdays.

2. What are you reading right now?
Misery by Stephen King for the upteenth (or like 4th) time.

3. What books do you have on request at the library?
I have none. I don't even have a library card. ::hangs head in shame::

4. Bad book habit:
Reading too quickly and missing key details. I never really noticed how often I did this until I started doing readalongs and everyone would point out really cool stuff and I'd have no idea what they were talking about, despite having read the exact same thing as them.

5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
Gonna continue to mock me about this, huh?

6. Do you have an e-reader?
I do. And have for awhile now.

7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
I usually only read one at a time but I'm not opposed to having a few going.

8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
How I read has mostly stayed the same, although I find myself composing blog posts while I'm reading. I promptly forget those compositions as I'm usually "writing" them while I have no way of actually recording anything. And besides, at this point I end up reviewing something about a month after reading it and there is no way I'd remember anything that long. I have found "what" I read has changed a decent amount. It's more diverse than before, which is sad when you consider how not-diverse it is right now. And I definitely have a better idea of new books coming out, something I never kept up with before.

9. Least favorite book you read this year:
::Looks over 2014 book spreadsheet because yes, I have one of those:: Hey, I've read a LOT of good books this year. Good job, me. But they can't all be winners and so far I'd have to say Zombie, Inc. is at the bottom of the pile.

10. Favorite book you’ve read this year:
This is way harder. Is it The Martian by Andy Weir? The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion? The Serpent of Venice by Christopher Moore? Another book that doesn't start with "The"? I can't decided.

11. How often do you read outside of your comfort zone?
Not often enough?

12. What is your reading comfort zone?
I feel like these questions would have made more sense in the other order. Anyway, something contemporary and funny.

13. Can you read on the bus?
"The bus" sounds very specific, like you have a particular bus in mind. I do not often ride "the bus" or "a bus". I will say no, though I do read a LOT on the train and subway. But I can't read in cars and buses are big cars so I'll assume no.

14. Favorite place to read:
I want to say somewhere really picturesque and quaint, like in a sun-dappled park or something like that but I pretty much never read in those places. Not even cos I'm not normally in these locations, but because I'm easily distracted when I do get a chance to read in a park or something like that. I tend to do well on the train, so I guess I'll say there?

15. What is your policy on book lending?
I do not do it often. And when I do it's only with certain people. Though to be honest, not many people ask me to borrow books.

16. Do you dog-ear your books?
I do not.

17. Do you write notes on the margins of your books?
Only with my Kindle, and then it's just sarcastic comment.s

18. Do you break/crack the spines?
I try not to. I legitimately have books that look like they've never been opened despite the fact that I have read them multiple times. Because I'm a crazy person.

19. What is your favorite language to read?
Ahahaha, you think I'm way smarter than I am. I actually have read a book in French but that was Le Petit Prince and it was over the course of like 4 months in class and also that's a children's book so probably shouldn't have taken that long. I have a copy of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream in Italian because why not? But yeah, English is pretty much my only option.

20. What makes you love a book?
If I can connect with it. Whether I'm connecting with the characters or the premise or the language, there needs to be something that gets under my skin, that my mind keeps going back to.

21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
If it's a book I love love love, I will try to shove it down everyone's throat, because I care like that. Otherwise if someone happens to mention either a particular book I've read or if they mention something I think would be up their alley I'll recommend it. Pretty much I love recommending books and if someone off-handedly mentions they're looking for a book I will attack them with book recommendations.

22. Favorite genre:
Funny? Yes. That'll do.

23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did):
Classics. While I love love love my funny books, I should read something that challenges me more.

24. Favorite biography:
I have not read many of these, so...Bill Bryson's Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid? Does that count? Or what about memoirs? I guess those don't really count either. Sorry, I got nothing here. The only biography coming to mind was one on Anne Boleyn that I read in the second grade, and I don't actually remember anything about it. I just remember having to dress up like the character for class and my parents really missed a golden opportunity to make me a headless costume.

25. Have you read a self-help book (and was it helpful)?
Probably but I can't think of any now (I am SO GOOD at these surveys). I know I read a little bit of He's Just Not That Into You that a former roommate had. That was all kinds of not good.

26. Favorite cook book:
I get most of my recipes from the internet as I think "Man, I want to try to make X". Or from my mom sending me magazines where she's already cut out all of the recipes she wants. I have some Rachel Ray cookbooks from a long time ago.

27. The most inspirational book you’ve read this year:
I don't know that I would categorize any of the books as inspirational. Dammit, another non-answer.

28. Favorite reading snack:
I am not coordinated enough to eat and read at the same time. I'd just make a mess. Or the food would be way over THERE and I'd be over HERE and I just wouldn't eat it.

29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience:
The River of No Return? Sorry, everyone who really loved this one. I did not and I thought I really, really would.

30. How often do you agree with the critics about a book?
Sometimes. I tend to only read critics of books I've already read.

31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
Fine with it. I mean, I feel a little bad cos I don't want to shit all over something that someone tried really hard at. But if I didn't like the book, I'm not going to lie about it.

32. If you could read in a foreign language, which would it be?
No idea. Sadly I don't read that much translated lit to say "Man, I wish I could read X language." Maybe Japanese? Not that I read much Japanese lit but I'd say more than others.

33. Most intimidating book I’ve ever read:
I read Hunchback of Notre Dame in like middle school. I had no idea what was going on (there is a LOT of Latin in that book...) I blame Disney.

34. Most intimidating book I’m to nervous to begin:
So many. Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, East of Eden by Steinbeck. Pretty much anything that I'm afraid will be too complicated for me.

35. Favorite Poet:
Shel Silverstein? I have not read a lot of poetry.

36. How many books do you generally have checked out of the library at a given time?
QUIT IT WITH THE LIBRARY STUFF

37. How often do you return books to the library unread?
Just being mean now

38. Favorite fictional character:
Wow. How do you even narrow this down? Thursday Next, Sirius Black, Bernadette, Lizzie Bennet, Biff, I could keep going.

39. Favorite fictional villain:
Umbridge? Although I hate her the most but maaaaaan, she was a good villain.

40. Books I’m most likely to bring on vacation:
Like specific titles? I don't change the books I'm reading for vacation. It's the same stuff I'd pick if I were just home.

41. The longest I’ve gone without reading:
A week or so?

42. What distracts you easily when you’re reading?
Anything. I'm super easily distracted. TV, the internets, if I'm trying to read in that idyllic park from earlier swans (there are swans and geese at this park near me and they are hilariously mean and I never get any reading done cos I just watch them terrorize small children/each other).

43. Name a book you could not finish:
My Mother She Killed Me, My Father She Ate Me Ugh just, not good.

44. Favorite film adaption of a novel:
Princess Bride. SO GOOD. I also love love love the '99 adaptation of Midsummer with Kevin Kline and Stanley Tucci. And of course the Lord of the Ring movies but it seems wrong to include them here cos I did not care for those books. So...

45. The most disappointing film adaptation:
How The Grinch Stole Christmas the Jim Carrey one. Just, sorry there wasn't enough material there for you and you had to pad it out. But you did it wrong. I'll assume The Cat in the Hat was terrible as well.

46. Most money I’ve ever spent in a bookstore at one time:
Like $50? Maybe? I tend to only buy one or two books and then at least one of them tends to be on discount so I don't spend much at one time. Now, over the course of a month the total can be fairly high. See my earlier answers about not having a library card.

47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
Not very often. I probably should do it more.

48. What would cause you to stop reading a book halfway through it?
If it's so terrible it's not even worth it to me to write a negative review about it (I try to only review books I've read all the way through) OR it's good but I'm not feeling it at the moment. I tend to finish whatever book I'm reading though.

49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
If by "organized" you mean "mostly on bookshelves" then yes.

50. Do you prefer to keep your books when done, or give them away?
Keep. I need to do a purge though.

51. Are there any books that you’ve been avoiding?
Yeah, those I am intimidated by. Because of the intimidation.

52. Name a book that made you angry:
The Last Girlfriend on Earth. Just...grrrr

53. A book I didn’t expect to like but did:
Octavia Butler? When I first read Dawn I did it because college made me and at first it was too weird for me. But as I went through it I realized this is INCREDIBLE.

54. A book I expected to like but didn’t:
The River of No Return. I am still bummed I didn't love that one.

55. Favorite guilt-free guilty-pleasure reading:
How can it be a guilt-free guilty-pleasure? Then it's just pleasure reading. I tend to read for pleasure so this is now back to my favorite type of books and those are humor.

Bookish questionnaire or Yay procrastination

I was thinking how I really need to write a post. And then I was thinking "But I am lazy". And then Sarah posted a bookish questionnaire and HOORAY for a distraction. Thanks, Sarah.

1. What is your favorite fictional food or drink? I am drawing a blank here, so we're off to a good start. Maybe the food from Alice in Wonderland, given it is the only thing I am coming up with. Yeah, let's go with that.

2. How long did it take you to finish your last book?
Not very long but then again the last book I finished was a graphic novel and those tend to go pretty quickly because I am probably not paying enough attention to the pictures.
3. How many times do you stare at your books or bookshelves each day?
Only when I'm trying to figure out what to read. Or if I'm looking for a particular book. The shelves are in the living room & bedroom so I see them a lot so I guess that time too.

4. How many Goodreads friends and books do you have?
Um some? And more than that? I'm not sure. There's something like 200 books on my I should read this list, I know that much.

5. Do you ever quote books in public?
I've slowly begun to realize how much of what I say is a quote of something (movie, tv show, maybe a book). If I traveled back in time no one would understand me. It'd be a mess.

6. Do you ever reread books?
Less in recent years than I used to because since I've been blogging I now have a billion books I NEED to read thus less "eh, I need something to read, I'll do this one again."

7. Do you judge a book by its cover?
Yeah, sure. Sometimes a really pretty cover will catch my eye. Oftentimes a crappy cover will turn me away. I get those BookBub emails with discount books each day and yeah, there's a lot of judging going on there.

8. Instagram, Twitter, or Tumblr?
Twitter and Tumblr. I have Instagram but never use it.

9. Which genres take you the longest to read?
Classics. Books that are generally harder/denser? Yes, those.

10. Who are your favorite BookTubers (or Book Bloggers)?
So many. You know who you are. (If you think it's you then yes, you're probably right)

11. How often do you pre-order books?
Um, never? I don't think I've ever pre-ordered a book.

12. Are you a shopaholic?
No?

13. How many times have you reread your favorite book?
A zillion. Or like 7. That's a good number.
14. Do you own a lot of books?
So many. I think I'm on the verge of saying too many. There may be a giveaway at some point.

15. Do you take pictures of your books before you read them?
I do not. I rarely take pictures of my books.

16. Do you read every day?
Not always a book but yes.
17. How do you choose a new book?
Sometimes I have a stack of books I'm planning on reading. Sometimes I just stare at my bookshelf hoping something will jump out. Sometimes I scan through my Goodreads TBR list until I find a book I want to read.
18. Do you always have a book with you?
Usually.
19. What are your biggest distractions from reading?
The internet. The tends to be the biggest distraction at a time when I could be reading. But also the usual stuff. TV, work, chores (ugh adulthood), working out. But really, it's usually the a mixture of laziness and the internet.

20. What is your favorite place to buy books? My favorite places are independent bookstores. I like shopping at my local store (even if I think it could be laid out better for browsing), I liked the bookstore I lived near in Boston, I like The Strand (even if it's suuuuper crowded). But I'm also fine buying from chains like B&N. Or Amazon. Or Costco. Just books, gimmie.

So hey, that was fun. Good times!

End Of Year Book Survey

I saw a couple people doing the end of year book surveys (recently Loni, who got it from Jaimie) and decided hooray for surveys that allow me to get a post up without too much thought!

Number of books read in 2013: 58. Unless I can finish re-reading Bryson's In A Sunburned Country before the end of year.

1. Best Book You Read In 2013? There were a lot of amazing books I read this year. I re-read Lamb by Christopher Moore and that's a favorite of mine so always good. But for new-to-me books of 2013 it would have to be Where'd You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple and I'm thinking even though I just read it a couple months ago, I need to read it again.

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t? This is a toss up between Michael Cunningham's The Hours and Neil Gaiman's American Gods. I thought they'd be books that were right up my alley (haha, pun) and they didn't do it for me.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2013? Where'd You Go, Bernadette? because I didn't think I'd love it like I did. I don't know why I got it in my head this was going to be some pretentious book and instead it was SO GOOD

4. Book you read in 2013 that you recommended to people most in 2013? I know I've tried to shove World War Z by Max Brooks down a lot of people's throats, but I first read that a few years ago so that isn't anything new. Bernadette was another one I kept telling people about, except most people already knew about it so breath wasted.

5. Best series you discovered in 2013? Other than Harry Potter I don't think I read any series this year. And I had discovered HP awhile before. I guess Bridget Jones's Diary and Confessions of a Shopaholic are both the first in their respective series, but while I enjoyed those books "eh" to the series as a whole. Pre-emptive "eh" at least, since I haven't read them.

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2013?
This is a tough one. Joe Hill? I read his book Horns and the book he wrote with his dad In the Tall Grass and those were awesome so I'm looking forward to reading more of his stuff. I don't know if he's a favorite author, but one I'm excited to read more of.

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you? I liked Breakfast at Tiffany's more than I was anticipating, although I was not a fan of the other short stories. Maybe True Grit as another book I enjoyed that is outside of my normal genres.

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2013? The Harry Potter books kept me enthralled. Of course, that's to be expected. Otherwise Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson had some good thrills in it.

9. Book You Read In 2013 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year? Where'd You Go, Bernadette? since I already said I want to re-read it. I expect I'll probably re-read some more HP and perhaps Eleanor & Park

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2013? Chuck Wendig's Blackbirds. I LOVE this cover. The book is very good as well.

11. Most memorable character in 2013? Coraline from Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Or maybe Bernadette (I know, I'm talking a lot about it. Only because it's so great.)

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2013? I think I'll have to go with The Kings and Queens of Roam by Daniel Wallace. That book had some beautiful imagery in it.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2013? Possibly We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver, and not necessarily in a good way. The book is very good and well-written and gave me stress headaches while I was reading it because it's very upsetting. So yeah, impactful.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2013 to finally read? Bridget Jones's Diary because it seems like one a lot of people had already read. Or Good Omens by Gaiman and Pratchett which I'm sure teenage me would have loved.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2013? [so, I have a lot of great passages highlighted in my Kindle. Which is not with me at the moment. So I'll fill this in later. Or more likely I'll forget, but know that I had intentions to fix this.]

16.Shortest and Longest Book You Read In 2013?
Shortest: In The Tall Grass by Joe Hill and Stephen King at 62 pages.
Longest: Under the Dome by Stephen King at 1,062 pages. Surprisingly Rowling was second longest, beating out George R.R. Martin. I also appreciate that King is both the shortest and longest book I read.

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? I'm thinking mostly the HP books, except since we did our SUPER EPIC READALONG I did get to talk to people about all the scenes. So that was sweet.

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2013 (be it romantic, friendship, etc). I love Joshua & Biff's bromance from Lamb. Also Cath and Reagan from Fangirl (yeah yeah or Cath and Levi but whatever, I heart Reagan)

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2013 From An Author You’ve Read Previously Not counting re-reading books I had read before I guess I'll have to go with both Eleanor & Park and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, because I can never decide which Rowell I like best. (All of them. The answer is all of them.)

20. Best Book You Read In 2013 That You Read Based SOLELY on a Recommendation From Somebody Else: Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt. Once I get at least three recommendations from this group, I must read the book and they have excellent taste so this works out. Next is that time travel River something book that I'm sure I will fall in love with.

21. Genre You Read The Most From in 2013? Umm. I dunno. I don't categorize my stuff into genres because it's too easy for something to fall into a bunch of genres and then I don't know what to do with it. So let's say the genre was "excellent books" and in which case, I read a lot of that.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2013? None? Or Sirius still? I still love him.

23. Best debut book you read? Is Bernadette the debut novel? Cos if so, that one.

24. Most vivid world/imagery in a book you read in 2013? HP. Rowling wins at creating this world, even if she didn't quite figure out the details of wizarding plumbing.

25. Book That Was the Most Fun To Read in 2013? Most of them. HP for the readalong. WWZ I loved listening to. Bernadette was hilarious.

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2013? I swear, I cry so much more easily now and I cried a lot. HP, Eleanor & Park, Tell The Wolves I'm Home. So amazing, even if it's a little soul destroying. But in a good way.

27. Book You Read in 2013 That You Think Got Overlooked This Year Or When It Came Out? I read a lot of big name books so I'm not sure. Maybe Fledgling because Octavia Butler is in general overlooked

28. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year? I don't set concrete challenges or goals because when I do that I fail. I am no good at forcing myself to read something. I guess a goal for the last few years has been to read The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen and with the help of a readalong I finally got that done. So hooray! Take that, Franzeeeeehhh.

29. Bookish Events on your blog in 2013? The HP and Corrections readalongs. Those were pretty great. I'd include the readathong but I'm pretty sure I managed like 20 pages so that didn't go so well.

30. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2013 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2014? That River book I mentioned above as one that I'm sure I'll like, even if I can't remember the name right now.

31. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2014 (non-debut)? Rowell has a new book, Landline coming out, and I think 2014. So that will be fun.

32. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2014? Get more consistent with my blogging. I've fallen behind a bit and I want to fix that. Of course my old laptop was a pain to use (overheated very easily, took about 20 min to start up, froze a lot) and Boyfriend+ got me a new computer because HE IS THE BEST EVERRRRR so I'm hoping this will help me blog some more.

(P.S. I keep having on-and-off issues with the comments showing up. Not sure why, but there you go. They came back before and were around this morning so I'm hoping they'll just come back again.)

A to Z Bookish Survey

I feel like I've been falling behind on blog posts these lasts...well a lot of this year. I used to go for 3 a week, preferably more. Now I'm lucky if I get two done. Some of that is because my laptop is on its last legs which means I tend to use Boyfriend+'s desktop (which I'm on right now) but I'd prefer to lay on the couch and write stuff so I do less random writing. Also he sometimes wants to actually use his computer. Rude. Also I'm lazy and after a long day if the options are A) write a blog post or B) sit on the couch and watch more Shark Week* while playing Amateur Surgeon, guess which one wins.

Is this post about me buckling down and getting back to 3+ posts a week? Ahahaha no. But it is about me doing a bookish survey I found over at Sarah's blog (who in turn got it from The Perpetual Page Turner) because I will hopefully get one review written this week and then I'll also have this to post and look at me go!

Authors you've read the most books from: Wait, I have to get up? Ugh FINE. *runs upstairs to count books* Christopher Moore wins with 13 but Bryson was a close second with 12. So no surprises here.

Best sequel ever: Does a sequel only mean the second book? What about a third in a series? Wikipedia wasn't that helpful in answering this question but it DID teach me the term interquel so win some/lose some. Anyway I extra heart The Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde, so even though it's the third in the series I don't care and that's my answer. TAKE THAT, SURVEY

Currently reading: We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. I like this question cos it required a minimum amount of work to answer.

Drink of choice while reading: Anything? I do a lot of reading on the train or subway so I'm not normally drinking anything because I'm not that talented. I guess if I'm reading at home...water? That's boring. How about a single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man's hat? Yes, that'll do.

Ereader or physical book: It really doesn't matter. If it's a book I think I'll extra super special like, I try to get a physical copy. Or at least I did in the beginning. Considering I have both Attachments and Eleanor & Park in ebooks I've given up that rule.

Fictional character that you probably would have dated in high school: Sirius? Can I say Sirius even though that would have been a bit statuary. I don't think I read enough YA to give a non-illegal answer.

Glad you gave this book a chance: Where'd You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple which for reasons I don't understand I was ready to pass on. Then Alice mentioned something about it taking place in Seattle and I thought I GUESS I'll give this a chance AND THEN I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. Review coming and it will involve a lot of internet yelling.

Hidden gem book: Fforde's Nursery Crime series because I feel like not enough of you realize how hilarious these books are. Or else Octavia Butler's Kindred. READ THEM ALL

Important moment in your reading life: Starting this blog. It's been so wonderful and I've met so many great people and I am incredibly happy to have this little space.

Just finished: Where'd You Go, Bernadette? and I kinda wanted to start it over again when I finished it because it's SO GOOD.

Kind of books you won't read: text books? Not anymore anyway. There are genres I stay away from (romance...) but never say never

Longest book you read: It's gotta be some Stephen King. IT was...well I was going to exaggerate and say 1000 pages but that exaggeration isn't great enough since I think it was closer to 1200 pages. Either IT or 11/22/63 since both of those books went on and on.

Major book hangover because of: I'm blanking on a title. Probably because I was so traumatized. Let's go with Harry Potter, especially the end of this year's readalong.

Number of bookcases you own: 9 and we need more. But some of those are small because Boyfriend+ was in denial of how many books I have and would acquire and we didn't just go with the full size ones to start with

One book you've read multiple times: any of the Bryson books. I don't even know how many times I've re-read them

Preferred place to read: might actually be the train, because it's good uninterrupted reading time. I love laying on my couch and reading but I'm easily distracted and my living room offers up many distractions.

Quote that inspires you: I got nothing...

Reading regret: That I get easily distracted and thus don't get more reading done. This isn't something I can blame on work or whatever. I mean, I could (I WILL) but really, a lot of the time I have some time to read and I end up doing something else, a lot of which is watch stupid TV.

Series you started and need to finish: I don't read that many series so I dunno. I think there are some more books in the Thursday Next series but I haven't seen them in paperback yet. I'm still making my way through Game of Thrones but doing it slowly

Three of your all-time favorite books: Lamb by Christopher Moore, The Well of Lost Plots by Jasper Fforde, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare abridged by the Reduced Shakespeare Company

Unapologetic fangirl for: It's probably obvious by now but Fforde, Moore, Bryson. And also Rainbow Rowell. And some Caitlin Moran

Very excited for this release: Ummm. Even though most of my reading is contemporary, I feel like I'm never anticipating a new title. They just sort of happen.

Worst bookish habit: Feeling the need to finish a book even if I'm not liking it. I need to learn to let go

X marks the spot! start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th book: You're saying I have to get up again? Which shelf? I went over before there are 9 of them. Fine, I'll just pick one. *gets up again* *grumble/counts* The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. I didn't try to pick a shelf that had fancy/impressive books. For example, another book on that shelf is Why Do Men Have Nipples? Also, there isn't too much logic to the organization of the books...

Your last bookish purchase: Where'd You Go, Bernadette? Oh man, I feel like I'm talking this book up (even though this one is just asking which bookish thing did I most recently spend money on) my review better be worth it

Zzz-snatcher. Which book kept you up way late?: I do very little reading late a night, instead spending my time watching TV or playing online. I have however spent a lot of time staying up late reading Jenny Trout's 50 Shades of Grey recaps and they're hilarious.

On a completely unrelated note, do you guys know the YouTube channel PBS Ideal Channel? My brother introduced it to me this weekend. He showed it to be Sunday afternoon and I proceeded to watch it for the rest of the day because screw productivity. To make this connect to books, my brother introduced it to me by way of the How Did Sherlock Holmes Pave the Way for 50 Shades? So see, books. Anyway, you should watch it right now. Or if you're at work...well, just discreetly watch it. Or fine, wait till you have some free time.

*Did you know Netflix has the past seasons? BECAUSE IT DOES!
