Blog Hop III

I was away last weekend and couldn't partake in the previous blog hop, so I'm happy to get a chance this week.

This week's Blog Hop question, as determined by Crazy-For-Books.com is "Tell us about the book you're currently reading"

For those of you that follow me, or else just glanced at my recent posts, you can see I'm primarily reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke.  I'd seen the book in book stores and on my friends' shelves for awhile, but I didn't actually know much about it when I picked it up from the bookstore.  Really the only thing I knew was the cover looked familiar and it was on the bargain table, my favorite table at any bookstore.  I'm about half way through it and loving it!

Because Strange & Norrell is long and heavy, I've so far taken one break and re-read the play The Compleat Works of Wllm Shkspr (abridged) by the Reduced Shakespeare Company which I can't recommend highly enough.  I'm on my second copy after losing my first one during one of my many moves.  I decided I couldn't go much longer without reading it again so I bought a new copy as soon as I found it.

I'm going to be taking a second break from Strange & Norrell so I can pick up the book I'm supposed to be reading for my book club What's My Name, Fool?: Sports and Resistance in the United States by Dave Zirin.  I haven't found it in any bookstores yet but I'll be ordering a copy soon.

  1. Hi -- coming over from the hop.

I saw a dvd performance of the Reduced Shakespeare Company a few years back and could not stop laughing. I'll have to pick up their book.

I'm following your progress on Strange & Norrell and still debating on whether or not it's something I'd like....

  3. Great to see that you've read the Reduced Shakespeare company book. If you haven't seen them perform & ever get the chance, you should. They are hysterical.

    Hopping on by....

  4. Suzanna - I have a VHS copy of the RSC. I should probably upgrade to DVD :) Strange & Norrell isn't exactly the type of book I usually go for but I'm liking!

Kelly - Thanks for stopping by!

Bev - I've seen the group live perform Complete American History (abridged) but I'd love to catch them doing Shakespeare. As I mentioned to Suzanne I do have a well-worn VHS copy of them performing Shakespeare which I've watched more times than is probably healthy.

  15. Hello!

New follower from "The Hop" - I love your tastes; I haven't read much of anything you're blogging about, but that's kinda great. It sounds interesting and funny - I've always wanted to pick up a Jasper Fforde novel - might just go do it now. Have you read The Eyre Affair? I heard that was pretty good.

    Happy Reading and Hopping!

  16. Thanks everyone for stopping by! I love meeting new bloggers

For those that haven't read it or started it but never finished I recommend Strange & Norrell. At least so far. I suppose things could take a turn and I retract this recommendation, but so far I'm loving it.

Roof Beam Reader - The Eyre Affair is one of my favorite books and the whole Thursday Next series (Eyre Affair is the first) is my favorite book series. I've yet to be disappointed by anything from Fforde. And if you figure out exactly how you're supposed to pronounce his last name let me know.

  18. Found you via the Hop and am loving your blog!

I've been hesitant to try this book simply because I am terrified of chunksters. Busy days as an English prof and busy nights as a new mom always make me think I won't be able to finish a big book in a timely manner. Apparently I was wrong because I whipped through The Passage in record time. Am slightly less afraid now, so maybe this one will go back on my wishlist.

    Happy hopping!

  19. Thanks for stopping by my blog! I read Strange and Norrell for book club: BAD CHOICE because it took most members three months to read! Plus the whole discussion was about whether we liked the footnotes or not :) I thought it was cool though, look forward to seeing your review!
